US Dominates Bitcoin ETFs in 2024

Largest Spot Bitcoin ETF Market

The United States became the largest holder of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, capturing 100% of the $44.2 billion inflows into global crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs). This achievement followed the historic approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in January 2024.

In contrast, Switzerland, the second-largest market for crypto ETPs, witnessed only $630 million in inflows, highlighting a 98% gap compared to the U.S.

Canada's Historic Outflows

Canada, the first country to launch a spot Bitcoin ETF in 2021, experienced record outflows of $707 million from its crypto ETPs in 2024. This marked a significant reversal from the explosive $4.2 billion inflows Canada saw in 2021, when its Purpose Bitcoin ETF debuted.

Why the U.S. Leads the Bitcoin ETF Market

Dominance in the ETF Industry

The U.S. has been the global leader in ETFs since their inception, accounting for over $10.5 trillion of the $15 trillion global ETF market. This dominance is attributed to decades of investor trust, familiarity with ETF structures, and the U.S.'s role as the largest capital market in the world.

Additionally, the U.S. stock market accounts for more than 60% of the global stock market capitalization, offering unparalleled liquidity and institutional support for investment products.

Investor Behavior

U.S. investors are known for embracing risk and innovation, particularly in technology and emerging markets. This adventurous approach has positioned U.S.-based Bitcoin ETFs as leaders in terms of assets under management (AUM).

Canada's Decline in Bitcoin ETF Market

Shifting Investor Behavior

The approval of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs prompted Canadian investors to shift their funds to more liquid and institutionally supported U.S.-based options. These ETFs offer broader participation and better liquidity, making them more attractive to investors seeking efficiency and reduced costs.

This shift resulted in Canadian Bitcoin ETFs becoming the only ETF category in the country to experience outflows in 2024.

Future of Bitcoin ETFs

As U.S. Bitcoin ETFs continue to dominate the market, it's unlikely that other regions will surpass the U.S. in terms of AUM for Bitcoin products. However, European issuers are carving out a niche by offering innovative ETPs with features like staking yields, which could attract a different investor base.

Despite these innovations, the U.S. remains the focal point for Bitcoin ETFs, thanks to its robust market infrastructure and investor confidence.
